Man-of-the- Match Award (Ian Reed Memorial Trophy) – joint winners Richard & Matthew Till

Report by Albert Pattison

Sessay had one of the most comprehensive and quickest victories in a Hunter’s York Premier Cup final  when they crushed Clifton Alliance by 9 wickets in  16.4 overs at Pickering.

Appearing in their first final, Clifton opted to take first innings but were soon in trouble against a side who were contesting their third successive league cup final, having lifted the trophy in 2007.  Richard till made two decisive early strikes when he removed both the Alliance’s free-scoring openers Richard Musgrave and Aaron Finch with just 14 on the board. He quickly struck for a third time when skipper Steve Langstaff held a catch to remove his opposite number before getting himself on the wicket takers list as Clifton slumped to 22-4. With Till taking 3-15 in his 8 overs and Langstaff 3 for 13 in a similar spell, Cliftons’s innings deteriorated to 59-8.  The unwanted record of a lowest ever total in the final was avoided when the score moved past 74 thanks largely to Chris Malthouse’s 23 but when Matt Till took 2-18, Clifton found themselves back in the pavilion for only 97.

Batting became an entirely more attractive proposition when Sessay batted and a ten wicket victory seemed assured as Mark Wilkie and Matthew Till set about their task with relish. Their partnership had reached 91 when it was rather unexpectedly ended by a direct hit which dismissed Till for 49. This proved to be a minor hitch as Richard Till quickly struck a four and a six to end the proceedings leaving Mark Wilkie unbeaten with 37.

The trophies were presented by League President George Myerscough whilst the Man of the Match adjudicator was Adrian Grayson, who had started his long and illustrious career as a Pickering player. In his considered judgement the brothers Richard and Matthew Till shared the the award and thus became the first joint winners of the Ian Reed memorial Trophy.
