Games to be played on Sunday 14th June
Report by Albert Pattison
Jonathon Bean cracked 118 for the holders Woodhouse Grange who posted a total of 265-3 when batting first against Goole Town. Three team-mates also made good scores with Nick Hadfield making 30 before Andrew Bilton 60no and Joel Hughes 33no saw their side to a challenging total. Goole Town had reached 84-5 when rain stopped play and, having batted for 24 overs, were some way behind the required runs rate thus allowing Grange to book an away trip to Clifton Alliance in Round Two
Clifton’s successful first round passage was a fairly easy affair as they won by 6 wickets with 11.1 overs to spare. Despite 33 from Dave Bradshaw , Stamford Bridge slipped to 47-4. A fifth wicket stand of 92 between Oli Pimlott 54 and Paul Milner 30 then improved matters and enabled Bridge to reach 155-8. Clifton skipper James Postill closed with figures of 3 for 20. Aussie Aaron Finch then shredded the Stamford attack as he hit five sixes in a score of 74, made off 64 balls. John Gilham added 29 whilst Jason Gatus remained unbeaten with 25 as Clifton reached a winning 156-4.
Acomb carried their league impetus into the cup environment as they inflicted a 139 run defeat on current league leaders Easingwold. Their massive total of 310-5 was only 14 short of a competition record, ironically currently held by Easingwold, and included two century partnerships. At the top of the order Leo Sacks hit a fine 105 as he and Matt Dickinson 66 recahed 112 before the latter departed. Sacks then joined up with Saturday century maker Andy Tute to add 126 for the second wicket. The opener eventually fell after reaching three figures whilst his skipper was dismissed for 79. In reply, Jonathon Marwood made 27, Richard Bowling 26 and Paul Redshaw 25 but Easingwold were undone for 171 by Scott Nicholls who claimed 4 for 29.
Dunnington were another side to progress via a fastest run rate when their reply to Thirsk’s 186-8 was aborted after 25.1 overs with their score at 139-2. For Thirsk, Liam McKendry 53 and Aussie Tom Polkinghorne 42 put on 110 in a productive opening stand whilst Sean Holmes added an unbeaten 40. Jack Bolam’s 4-43 included three wickets in his final over which helped peg the visitors to 186-8. Harwood Williams then made a decisive unbeaten 73 to ensure his side were ahead of the target when the rain gained the upperhand.
Two first division sides were in opposition at Bridlington where an unbeaten century by Damon Gormley failed to produce a positive result for Folkton & Flixton. Gormley made 117no as Flixton posted a total of 170-2 in their first outing in the Premier Cup. Bridlington then progressed to a comfortable win through Richard Lount 62 and Nick Tennant who made an unbeaten 73. Having won the Readman Trophy for the past three seasons, Flixton were left with the taste of league cup defeat for the first time since 2005.
Beaten 2008 finalists Sessay negotiated the first round successfully when they won at Pickering on a faster run rate. Sessay’s 226-3 included a half century from Matt Till (65) and other useful scores from Dave Johnson 48no, Nick Thorne 36 and Tom Kay 27no. In reply Chris Nicholls had reached 31no in a total of 126-5 when the rains forclosed the match after 28 overs.
In one of the games to be played to a conclusion Australian Adam Dilley struck 127 off 105 balls as he shared an opening partnership of 128 with Hornsea skipper Paul Johnson (38) Their side’s 219-5 proved to be beyond the reach of Hull Zingari who were all out for 158 as Alistair Kirk took 4 for 47. Andy Hanson’s 33 was the main contribution to Zingari’s lost cause.
Malton’s Mike Linsley took 3 for 27 and then m,ade 53no but his innings, like that of his side, was aborted after 24 overs when the weather took over leaving Malton’s 100-1 lagging behind the required run rate. Earlier Andy Burton had made 106no and Ollie Grantham 42 in a what proved to be a winning score of 205-6 for Beverley Town.
