Results of Round 1 Matches (played Monday 25th May)
Castleford (HC 24) 200 - 4 (Chris Jackson 56, Simon Tucker 40 Andrew Cook 2-21) Hovingham had a bye. Report on Round 1 Matches (played Monday 25th May) by Albert Pattison The first round ties of the Readman Trophy, in the newly vamped Twenty/20 format provided some entertaining games with both batsmen and bowlers putting in good performances. Neither of last year’s finalists were in action as holders Folkton & Flixton have stepped up this season into the Hunters Premier Cup whilst 2008 Runners-Up Fenner received a walkover when Pocklington were unable to fulfil the fixture. The new format will inevitably render many of the competition records redundant so the first round performances have set the standards for a new set of competition records. However team records need to be adjusted to take into account the handicap system. At Saville Park, Division 4 strugglers Castleford benefited from their 24 run start to beat Division 1 promotion chasers Ripon by 13 runs in a high scoring game. The hosts enhanced 200-4 included a half century from Chris Jackson (56) whilst Ripon skipper Gary Blackburn replied with the day’s top score of 67. However this was to no avail as John Tucker’s 4-15 saw the visitors close on 187-9. At Thorp Arch, Tadcaster Magnet skipper Paul Clark hit 57 to see his side past the home score of 154-8 to win by 7 wickets. The day’s lowest scoring game saw Stillington scrape to a 2 wicket win after restricting Rowntrees to 76 which included 16 runs start. With 8 more handicap runs, Stillington eased home despite Graham Pierce’s 3 for 5. Sheriff Hutton Bridge are one of the eight scratch sides in the competition but were able to set the new format’s highest total when they reached 199-4 against Huntington. A 119 opening stand was posted by Ian Clish 63 and Phil Stothard 51. Receiving a maximum handicap of 32, Huntington reached 93 before losing their second wicket but then collapsed dramatically to 138 all out as Mark Prosser grabbed 4 for 23. In the East Riding, Driffield won by 5 wickets at Londesbrough Park whilst Scarborough had a successful trip to Sewerby where they set aside their poor league form to win by 7 wickets with Ashish Kundi making 54. Further South, Steve Scammells took 2 for 10 and then made 31 but his efforts were to no avail as Hull & YPI beat Welton & Brough by 23 runs. There were victories for Selby, by 5 wickets at Osbaldwick and Whitkirk whose Alex Gummerson made 57no against Bolton Percy in a 14 run victory for the Leeds side. Heworth triumphed by 7 wickets after making the short trip to New Earswick. Harrogate’s Peter Gawith made 54 in their total of 155-7 against Dringhouses whoe then suffered a 98 run defeat as Ben Dewhirst posted new record figures of 5 for 10. The first ten wicket win was recorded by Duncombe Park as Brian Leckonby 50no and Phil Marwood 37no saw them past Sheriff Hutton’s 94-8.
