Woodhouse Grange won by 8 runs
Report by Albert Pattison Woodhouse Grange won the 36th Hunters Premier League Cup when they defeated local rivals Dunnington by 8 runs at a well attended final at Stamford Bridge. With the two sides entering the fray having each won the cup on 8 previous occasions, Dunnington seemed to be coasting to victory when they required a mere 24 runs to win with seven wickets and some six overs remaining but then collapsed sensationally in a frantic finale. Batting first, Woodhouse were soon in trouble when Dave Johnson dismissed both Jon Bean and Andrew Bilton with only nine on the board. Opener Nick Hadfield and Mike Burdett then mounted a determined fightback despite finding runs hard to come by. The pair had added 107 before Hadfield was caught by Bolam off Harwood Williams for 64. Burdett completed a good half century but, on 52, hit a return catch to Williams who went on to claim 3-34. Grange’s cause then benefitted from Andrew Anderson who made 25 but Johnson returned to again cause problems in taking 4-25 as Woodhouse were pegged to 182-8. In contrast to their opponents shaky start to their innings, Dunnington’s openers fared well and had posted a total of 70 before Collis King was bowled by Chris Suddaby for 34. Harwood Williams was then joined by Dave Johnson in a 64 run stand for the second wicket until the latter was caught by keeper Mike Burdett off Jake Murphy for 19. Grange were badly hampered by the absence of leading bowler and captain Steve Burdett who was unable to take the field after suffering an injury whilst batting. Man of the Match Harwood Williams had moved serenely to 80 before he was third out at 143 but his side moved to 159 before suffering the first of an eventual four run outs. Dunnington’s collapse was then spectacular as seven wickets fell for a mere 15 runs to see them all out for 174 with two balls remaining. |
