HUNTERS YORK SENIOR LEAGUE XI V HALIFAX LEAGUE

The Hunter’s York & District Senior League had a comfortable victory over the Halifax League when the sides met at Carlton Towers C.C. in a repeat of last year’s final. Last year’s final was a close encounter with the York side just managing a two wicket victory with three balls to spare but on this occasion the margin was a more decisive 93 run victory in a rain interrupted game.

York openers Anthony Gibbins and Danny Hagan moved to 59 in 38 minutes before Gibbins fell for 38. A further wicket fell in the same over and York were in a spot of trouble when Hagan was third out for 28 at 83. A decisive partnership then ensued as Selby’s Mathew Hoyle combined with Goole’s Neil Foster to add 115 for the 4th wicket. The 18 over alliance ended with Foster hitting a return catch to Richard Laycock after making 66. The same bowler then repeated the feat to dismiss Hoyle for 55 off the final delivery of the innings as York closed on 211-5.

With rain clouds gathering, Halifax attempted to reach a target of 56 runs in the first ten overs in order to obtain pole position in the event of an abandonment. In fact their strike rate was almost up to requirements at the end of the tenth over but three wickets had been lost in the process. The exercise had by then become irrelevant as an improvement in weather conditions allowed the game to take it’s full course. Opener Reece Jennison struck two sixes in making 33 out of the first 40 before being undone by Thirsk paceman Stuart Christon who had final figures of 3-25. Spinners Ryan Kirk (2-32) and Steve Precious (3-28) then put the issue beyond doubt. Paul Senior struck some lusty blows in making 27 from the number nine berth before falling to Precious as the visitors were all out for 118.
