White Rose Trophy Round 1 v Huddersfield Central
On a bitterly cold day on top of the Pennines, both sets of batsmen mastered a damp uncovered pitch to provide a superb game of cricket at Thurstonland CC. York eventually emerged winners by virtue of faster scoring rate.
Batting first, York started brightly with Liam Mckendry and Mike Lindsley scoring freely. When McKendry was caught for 45 (8-4's), York were already on 95 from just 18 overs. This brought Casey Rudd to the crease who continued to flay the Huddersfield attack with some superbly timed back-cuts, which complemented Lindsey's aggressive leg-side play well in a stand of 87.
Rudd's dismissal for 55 (8-4s) gave Captain Jack Bolam a chance to impress and was quickly into his stride, with some huge straight hitting. Indeed the last 12 overs brought York a valuable 106 runs. In between the carnage, Mike Lindsley brough up his century in fine style in the 42nd over. Bolam 66 (5-4's, 4-6's) and Lindsley's superb 120 (15-4's 2-6's) both not out (a stand of 120), ended the innings at a huge 302-2.
After the break Stuart Christon (0-17 from 7) and Graham Knott (1-21 from 6) opened York's attack and bowled economically, building pressure on the batsmen, Knott taking the first wicket. James Kerr, a late stand in form Goole, then carried on his good form from Saturday with a miserly spell of 1-19 from 7, which helped push the run rate to well over eight an over from the halfway point.
Adam Iyer also bowled tidily gaining two wickets in two balls at one stage, but the small boundaries and fast outfield began to take effect.
Huddersfield had a good over and suddenly the momentum had switched, Morris (79 containing 7-4's and 5-6's), Henshaw (29) and Binns (26) began crunching some huge blows and with ten overs to spare they needed 103 with 5 wickets in hand. Some composed bowling from Liam McKendry and Graham Knott kept the batsmen to mainly singles again, building good pressure until York settled the nerves by making an important break through, running out the well set Binns after a mix up.
McKendry (3-31 from 7) then bowled two batsmen in quick succession to practically kill off the game before a final twist, the rain, which finally brought the players in with 6 overs left in the game and Huddersfield stranded on 229-8.
York had the better run rate of 6.04 compared to Huddersfield's 5.2, and now progress to play either the Doncaster Sheffield Alliance or the Central Yorkshire league at Easingwold on the 12th July in the semi-final.
The game was played in a superb spirit, the umpires on game completion saying they thought both players were a credit to their leagues. Many thanks go to Jim Mckendry for scoring.
