II (30) beat Dunnington II (4) by 131 runs Report by Albert Pattison Games played on Saturday, 11 September 2010 PREMIER DIVISION Dunnington sensationally snatched the Hunters York Senior League title from long time leaders Clifton Alliance on the final day of the season when they gained much the better of a draw with Fenner whilst the former leaders were being beaten by Studley Royal. Dunnington’s hero was Dave Johnson whose 101 was his fourth century of the season. With Harwood Williams adding 45 in a late run burst, Dunnington reached a fine 213-5 in a game reduced to 29 overs. Johnson then followed with 3-17 as he and Dave Kitching 4-35 caused mega problems for all but one of the Fenner batsmen. The noteable exception was Will Rhodes who made a resolute 77no which saw his side get a nervous draw at 118-9. Long time leaders Clifton Alliance took a 14 point lead into the final game and batted first against Studley Royal. No Clifton batsman was able to make a big score with Joel Hughes 29, John Gilham 25 and Alex Wray 25 all playing cameo innings as Tom Hixon took 4-35. Hughes then took 3-49 as the Alliance seemed to be in control. However Matt Pickles then played a brilliant innings which saw him hit an unbeaten 80 as he and Matt Coad swept the Royals to a 4 wicket victory in 42.1 overs. By gaining a sixth wicket in the 42nd over, Clifton gained a bonus point which clinched the runners-up spot. Easingwold ensured fourth place when they scraped to a 2 wicket win over relegated Acomb in 52.3 overs after Acomb were dismissed for 159 with three overs to spare. Acomb skipper Andy Tute failed by 30 runs to log his first 1000 run aggregate when he was dismissed for 29. Andy Green added 32 but the Easingwold bowlers were in command with Paul Redshaw taking 5-52 and Jonathon Marwood 3-31. The home side then found runs hard to acquire but were indebted to Martin Piercy 46 and Richard Bowling 37 whose efforts enabled their side to finish their season on a high with just three of the extra 18 deliveries remaining unused. Thirsk were dismissed for the Premier Division's lowest total of the season when they were bowled out for only 47 by visiting Stamford Bridge. Stamford themselves had been all out for 121 with Dave Chaplin making 49 and Andy Milner 25no as Thirsk’s bowlers did their stuff. There were three wicket returns by Stuart Christon 3-33 and Ryan Mckendry 3-34 whilst Ben England and Tom Stead supported with two wickets each in a youthful attack. However the opposition bowlers then hit back with a vengeance at Mark Fairweather grabbed 6-17 in a stunning 18 overs spell and Martin Veysey gained 4-27. Played 18th September National Village Champions, Sessay rounded of their fine season in style when they won their postponed final fixture at Goole Town by 6 wickets to finish fifth in the Premier Division. Batting first, Goole were taken to 188-8 by Anthony Gibbins with 28, Ashton Nottingham 30 and Kevin Murphy who made 39. Sessay skipper Stephen Langstaff took 3-44. He then watched with satisfaction as Mark Wilkie , with 58 and Matt Till 67 compiled an opening stand of 110. James Spencer, with an unbeaten 28, then completed the job to leave Ben Lamb with scant reward for his 3 for 29. DIVISION 1 It was very much a day of mixed emotion for York skipper David Simpson who experienced the highs and lows that makes cricket such an intriguing game. Requiring 19 points to clinch the divisional title, York put themselves firmly in command by dismissing bottom placed Ripon for a mere 95. Howard Wooding made 29 of these whilst Simpson’s son Andrew claimed 3 wickets whilst conceding just one run. Requiring just 12 runs to record his first ever 1000 runs in a season in a long and successful career, Simpson then experienced a nightmare when he was run out at the non-striker's end without facing a delivery. No doubt his deep personal disappointment was somewhat alleviated when Simon Lambert 25no and Jason Wackett 56no then knocked off the runs without further loss. Dave Greenlay starred for Pickering who won by 30 runs at Hornsea but his side narrowly missed out on a quick return to the top flight. The former Thirsk and Dunnington all-rounder hit 70 in his side’s 192-8 and then returned 5-68 as Hornsea were dismissed for 162. Greenlay was the only Pikeman to show with the bat as Alistair Kirk took 3-50 and spinner Ryan Kirk 4-48. For the seasiders, Ben Wallis made 33 and Dan Dales and Ali Kirk 25 apiece. DIVISION 2 Selby emerged as divisional champions for the second successive season when they bagged the 2nd Division title after heading the 3rd Division in 2009. Pocklington took first knock but were dismissed for 123 with Gareth Roberts claiming 4-29. Ian Josefowitz with 32 and Neil Jackson 28 made runs for the visitors. When the home side replied Lee Wild made 42 whilst Kev Lamb was unbeaten with 34 when Selby gained their 22nd win of the season. Having been runners up to Selby in Division 3 last year, Harrogate find themselves in exactly the same position this year after clinching their second successive promotion with an 8 wicket win at New Earswick who are heading in the opposite direction. James Routledge 30 and Andy James 39 showed some form for Earswick but their colleagues were unable to come to terms with Rob Stamworth who bagged 6-39. With Rob Kay also proving a handful in taking 4-42, the White Rose Avenue side were all out for 111. Harrogate had a wobble at the top of the order when they slipped to 15-2 but were then led to their tenth win by skipper George Owram who made 57no and Andy Hawkswell who was unbeaten with 42. There was no play due to the weather at Osbaldwick where Beverley Town were the scheduled visitors. Whitkirk made a bold declaration after reaching 134-7 in 28.3 overs in a game reduced to 30 overs at Dringhouses in an attempt to earn a win and possible promotion. However they were unable to claim their opponents' final wicket so only gained a draw which, in fact was irrelevant as Harrogate’s win put the issue beyond doubt. Rich Simpson made 30 for Whitkirk as Mick Kenyon lifted his seasonal bag to 61 by claiming 4-35. Mark Murphy then took 3-21 but Ian Wilson dug in with 25no to see Dringhouses to 90-9. Sewerby replaced Malton & Old Malton in fourth place after winning by 5 wickets when the two sides met on the cliff top. For Malton, Wayne Dawson made 46 as his side were dismissed for 152 by Lewis Beasley’s 4-46. Mike Artley then led Sewerby’s successful run chase with an unbeaten 70 whilst Ricky Robinson added 34. The game at Carlton Towers was reduced to 37 overs when Tadcaster Magnet took first innings. Skipper Paul Clark hit 68 and Matt Hunt made 31 as Magnet reached 151 all out. There was a good bowling performance by Mark Holmes who returned figures of 6-58. No Carlton batsman was able to play any sort of similar innings as Pat Gilbert with 3-20 and Adam Gibson 3-44 wrapped up their final innings in Division 2 at 115 all out. DIVISION 3 Thorp Arch & Boston Spa ensured 3rd Division survival when they were taken to a 6 wicket home victory by Guy Whatmore 29no and Will Bartlett 32no whose unbroken 5th wicket stand of 67 saw their side overtake Hovingham’s 87 all out. Peter Stark’s 26 was the best effort by a Hovingham batsman as Josh Vivian took 3-18 despite conceding 7 wides. Whilst their senior eleven were travelling down to Lords for the National Village Cup Final on the following day, a weakened Sessay II proved to be too strong for Bubwith who lost by 2 wickets. Despite picking up maximum points, Sessay were unable to avoid filling the third relegation slot in the division. Bubwith’s 120 all out contained 36 by C Lambert and 35 from Dave Stephenson whilst Jim Easton took 5-39 and Karl Carver 3-10. Sessay’s reply was fronted by Darren Atkinson with 40 whilst Luke Ramsay made 29 to nullify the 3-23 return by Richard Readman. Two sides who still had realistic hopes of promotion clashed at Hull & YPI where the home side had a thrilling last ball win over Duncombe Park. Good batting from Park’s Peter Kent 67, Pete Humpleby 35 and Mike Harding 30 enabled the Helmsley side to total 215 all out, with Drew Moran taking 3-18 for the Chanterlands based team. Hull then benefited from Matt Watkin’s 64 and Dave Williamson’s 48 but Peter Kent’s 4-50 seemed to have tipped the scales in the visitors' favour. However 17 years old Tom Appleyard then turned the game on it’s head. Firstly he hit the third ball of the final over out of the field then, with 2 needed for victory off the final delivery he repeated the full value strike to close with 31no off just 24 balls and earn YPI victory by one solitary wicket. Because of Yorkshire’s county game at North Marine Road, Scarborough had to entertain Bolton Percy at Ganton C.C. who are thanked for their hard work to enable the game to go ahead. Needing an outright win to ensure promotion, Bolton Percy hit a first innings total of 210-8 declared after 31 overs, with half centuries from Matt Westwood 84 and Peter Houseman 55. Jason Rewcroft took 3-47 for the home side. In Scarborough’s rely, Ash Kundi hit 47 and Mike Hurst 42 but Houseman claimed 3-19 and Karl Martin 4-50. With Mike Furze taking three outfield catches, Scarborough were all out for 163 as Bolton ensured promotion. Bottom placed Stillington provided one of the day’s unexpected results when they recorded their second win of the season at the expense of near neighbours Sheriff Hutton. Adie Leckenby’s 5-43 had Sheriff all out for 113 in 35.3 overs with only Chris Megone 28 making any show with the bat. For Stillington, Barry Milburn made 29 and Tim Jarvis 25no which was just adequate as Andy Kenny’s 3-20 saw Stillington lose 8 wickets before winning in 42.4 overs. DIVISION 4A Drax ‘s first season in the League ended in triumph albeit on a somewhat low key when they picked up the points they required to clinch the Division 4A title without having to bowl a ball in anger when relegated Hornsea were unable to field a side. Jamie Middleton made 38 out of 106 when Selby batted first at Castleford whose Simon Tucker took 4-25. Tom Wragg’s 68 then earned the hosts a 6 wicket win. Fenner II recorded one of the quickest wins in the League’s history when they took a mere 21 deliveries to overhaul the 27 made by an 8 men Driffield side. Rich Barker had 4 for 9 and Graham Williamson made 19no for the winners. Olly Pimlott had moved to 56no and his team, Stamford Bridge, to 129-6 in 33 overs against Yapham before the game was abandoned as a draw. John Flint had 4-26 for Yapham. Woodhouse Grange recorded a comfortable victory over Osbaldwick but, with the result of Goole’s game at Hull Zingari being unknown, will need to wait to see whether they have gained the third promotion place from Division 4. Stuart Craven hit an unbeaten 100 whilst Paul Grewer made 25 before Grange declared at the end of the 44th over with a score of 182-8. Neil Bellerby took 3-26 for Osbaldwick who were then shot out for 85. Dave West made 30 but the decisive performances came from Grewer with 4-30 and Chris Pitts who returned 4-18. In the late reported result, Goole Town defeated Hull Zingari, and thereby secured the third promotion place from Division 4, ahead of Woodhouse Grange. DIVISION 4B Long time promotion favourites Acomb suffered an agonising 5 run defeat against Heworth which means they miss out on promotion to Division 3. Tim Outram made 45 and Martin Boothroyd 27 as Heworth posted a modest 128-7 in 44 overs. Chris Foster took 4-31 for the home team and then followed with an unbeaten 30. But he was left high and dry after his side were all out for 123 with N Siddique claiming 4-20 and Boothroyd 2-11 off just 17 deliveries. Malton & Old Malton nipped above Acomb to snatch the one automatic promotion spot when they beat Thirsk by 4 wickets. A feature of the Thirsk score of 134-9 in a 38 over game was 34 by Yorkshire County player Rochelle Petty. James Trueman pipped her score in making 40 but their side was prevented from posting a higher total by Shane Bonsor 3-55 and Simon Cass 4-40. Bonsor then made 41 and, with Steve Beal making 36no, Malton were able to reach a winning 136-6 despite a 4-19 haul by Barry Petty. Sheriff Hutton Bridge’s Chris Todd topped 500 runs for the season for the first time when his 41 against Dunnington lifted his aggregate to 501. There were other useful knocks by Danny Kiernan 37, Craig Hunter 30 and Rob Ellis 36 as the Bridge posted a total of 211-9. Dunnington were then rolled over for just 80 by Kiernan with 3-13 and Dave Ellis who took 5-40. Simon Richardson had 3-30 for the losers. Dringhouses II conceded their fixture with Pickering II.
