II (30) by 118 runs Rowntrees (4) lost to Selby II (30) by 5 wickets Yapham (30) beat Thirsk II (3) by 4 wickets York IV (30) beat Huntington (9) by 2 wickets Report by Albert Pattison GAMES PLAYED ON SATURDAY 10 SEPTEMBER, 2011 PREMIER DIVISION Having been presented with the League Champions Trophy by Immediate Past-President George Myerscough before the commencement of play, Woodhouse Grange’s season ended on something of a damp squib when rain and bad light caused an abandonment in the 46th over when Grange needed 21 runs to win with 7 wickets in hand. However, this did mean that Woodhouse maintained their unbeaten record. With their second eleven also having a similar unblemished season, the record books will need to be examined to check whether there has been a previous instance of both a club’s teams going through the same season unbeaten Needing points in their bid to avoid relegation, Goole’s batsmen put up a decent show in making 194-9 with Anthony Gibbins making 29 and Neil Foster 57. Successful for the Grange with the ball was Dave Suddaby with 6-64. When the eleventh time champions took their turn at the crease Nick Hadfield 64 and Chris Bilton 50 made half centuries. Opener Andy Bilton made 26 whilst Mike Burdett with 27no was poised to lead the chase to score the remaining 21 runs when rain and bad light caused the umpires to abandon the game after 46 overs with Woodhouse’s total having reached 174-3. By gaining a resounding nine wicket victory over Clifton Alliance, Beverley Town clinched the runners-up spot, their highest ever position in the York Senior League and can thus look forward to receiving the Costcutter Trophy at the League’s dinner in October. Three Clifton batsmen made cameo contributions but were unable to progress on to a significant total as Simon Roe claimed 6-84. Adam Slater 26, Jason Gatus 28 and Jake Capper 25 were the mentionable trio in an Alliance total of 178-9. Beverley openers Jamie Mitchell and Peter Groves then moved to 71 before the latter fell for 39. Mitchell then continued on to make 66no as he and John Fisher 59no, put together an unbroken stand of 109 to record a nine wicket win. Fenner’s hopes of pulling off a relegation escape at Easingwold were wiped away by long serving home batsman Paul Skilbeck who hit 108. With Dan Copeland 32 and Andrew Dawson 41 also amongst the runs, Easingwold moved to a total of 225-9. Fenner’s Luke Laybourne sent down a marathon 25 overs to claim 6-107. When his side responded Jason Helwig made 33 but lacked back-up as Paul Redshaw’s 4-50 helped dismiss the Hull based side for 158 to end their Premier Division ranking. Stamford Bridge survived a horrific collapse which saw them slip from 120-4 to 127-9 before they managed to edge to a winning 133-9 after pegging Heworth to 130-9. Heworth’s best two batsmen were Rich Bowling with 27 and Mark Bell who made 25. But first half honours went to Steve Sergeant with 5-37 in a 20 over spell. Sergeant then made 31 as he and skipper Matt Beckett 44 took Bridge to the edge of victory at 120-4. Tom Forsdike 6-48, then caused abject panic as Stamford lost 5 wickets for just 7 runs before edging to a precarious one wicket win that ensures their third placed rating. At Studley Royal an impressive piece of bowling by Richard Till was instrumental in helping Sessay protect a moderate score of 147-8 to gain a 7 run victory. Joe Watson was Sessay’s batting star in making 54 whilst Chris Cowton made 30. Steve Walmsley, with 4-43, appeared to have put the Royals in the driving seat. The home captain then added 36 as he and Gary Blackburn 50 made positive contributions with the bat. However Studley lost wickets to Mark Wilkie 3-24 and Steve Langstaff 3-25 who both benefitted from the superb bowling at the other end where Richard Till conceded just 26 runs off 18 overs to have a major influence on the result despite only taking one wicket. York’s hopes of moving above their visitors Dunnington lay in shreds at the tea-break after they had been bowled out for only 95. Ian Jarvis made 38 but the home side never recovered after slipping to 37-3 as Dave Johnson 5-48 and Dave Kitching 3-20 took full control. Dunnington skipper Paul Miles then cracked an unbeaten 56 as his side raced to an 8 wicket victory. DIVISION 1 Needing just 4 points to make certain certain of the Division 1 title Selby had a comfortable home victory over Hull Zingari to earn themselves a Premier place for the first time. Matt Bunn made 42 for the visitors who, like a number of sides before them, were unable to cope with Selby’s spinning duo of Steve Precious and Josh Jackson. This time it was Precious’s turn to grab the major share of the spoils with 6-25 whilst his finger twisting partner Jackson took 4-31 to dismiss the Chanterlanders for 105. Jamie Wheeler, with 45no, then led Selby to their history making 12th win of the season. After four years out of the top bracket, Sheriff Hutton Bridge reclaimed the Premier Division status that they relinquished at the end of the 2007 season, when they defeated Pickering by 6 wickets. Craig Aconley made 29 and skipper Shaun Smith 26no for Pickering but 4 wickets apiece for paceman Jamie Hopper 4-69 and spinner Elliott Cooper 4-44, left Pickering short of par at 167-9. Home opener Mark Fisher 34 and Paul Oldfield 28 laid a good foundation which was then built on successfully by acting skipper Adam Fisher and Dave Speake who had made 33 when he was out with the victory post looming close by. Fittingly Fisher was unbeaten with 53 when a 6 wicket win preceded a celebration pizza-party in the Bridge’s Moor Farm pavilion. Ed Cass took 3-28 for the losers. Acomb’s quest to replace the Sheriff Hutton side in second place got off to a shocking start when they slipped to 35-5 against visiting Harrogate. This later became 98-8 before Adam Green, with 31, then fronted something of a revival to produce a final total of 140. Successful bowlers for Harrogate were Jon Hare with 3-36, Andy Scurr 3-34 and Ben Hammond 3-29. Harrogate then struggled against the bowling of “out-of-retirement” Dave Sykes who took 4-38. Skipper George Owram made 36 and Ned Hammond 33 to help the visitors level the scores with their last pair at the crease before, in a somewhat farcical finish, Harrogate’s last wicket fell to a run out with some nine overs still to go to leave the match tied with each side scoring 140 all out. Clifton Alliance lifted themselves out of the bottom two at the last opportunity when they beat Bridlington by 6 wickets at Shipton Road. John Thornton, 5-56, took three wickets in 4 balls to reduce Bridlington to 75-5 and it was left to Brian Rudd 41no to give the Seasiders an air off respectability by adding 35 for the last wicket with J Cobb (8) to leave the home side a target of 141. Clifton skipper John Myers fell for 25 but the decisive factor was an 80 run 4th wicket stand between John Hetherton 32no and Ali Wray 42 which saw Clifton reach their goal in the 33rd over. Folkton & Flixton travelled to already relegated Hornsea in search of 10 points to secure survival. Their quest did not start in a promising manner as home openers Richard Hornby 93 and Paul Clappison 58 posted an opening stand of 125. The Flixton bowlers continued to make little impression as Paul Johnson made 59no and Ben Wallis 36 to take Hornsea to 288-3 and set their opponents a huge target. However Flixton’s batsmen the rose to the occasion with Oliver Stephenson leading the way. He lost Neil Elvidge for a quick-fire 34 but then embarked on an unbroken third wicket stand of 141 which earned his side both a respectable draw and 11 points to ensure divisional closure. In a game that saw 524 runs scored for the loss of just 5 wickets, Stephenson emerged with 128no and his partner Richard Malthouse 57no. Driffield started the day in a seemingly safe ninth place but after collapsing disastrously at Thirsk found themselves relegated in 11th place at the end of the day. Stuart Christon’s 4-14 helped destroy Driffield for only 65 in 30 overs. He then made 28 to thwart the efforts of Adam Wooley 3-25 as Thirsk recorded a 7 wicket victory. DIVISION 2 With the divisional champion and runners-up spots already decided, second placed Bolton Percy’s home encounter with champions Sewerby was something of a celebration match following a dual presentation session prior to the game. Unbeaten Sewerby took first innings on a batsman’s paradise and duly posted a total of 255-8. There were dual top scorers in Chris Chapman and Russ Robinson who each made 73 whilst Mike Artley added 29. League leading wicket taker Danny White added 4-64 to his previous 63 wickets whilst Tom Atkinson took 3-68. Bolton then mounted a spirited reply with Matt Westwood hitting 57 and Tom Malloch 39 and Peter Houseman 29 also making useful scores. Lewis Beasley’s 5-76 in 15.3 overs seemed to be maintaining Sewerby’s superiority but the scenario was changed dramatically by Bolton’s No. 7 batsman, Tom Atkinson who clattered an unbeaten 89 to take his side to a fine 2 wicket win with 3 balls to spare and wreck the Sewerby unbeaten record. Having seemingly been down and out at the halfway stage, Dringhouses have fought hard and, by gaining a good draw with York III on the final day, have managed to escape the relegation trapdoor. York’s Tom Clark probably dashed out to buy a lottery ticket after an extraordinary series of events during his innings of 46. Having been bowled off a no-ball he then had an even more remarkable slice of luck when his middle stump was removed but the two bails remained locked in position. Thinking he was out, Clark proceeded to head towards the pavilion and was then subjected to an attempted run out which was adjudged not out due to the ball being dead. Added to these let-offs was a dropped catch before he was eventually dismissed for his side’s top score. He was supported by Steve Jones with 35 and Kev Mendham 27 whilst Dringhouses star bowler Mick Kenyon took 6-73 and Tom Storr 3-56. Faced with 46 overs, Dringhouses made a spirited attempt at gaining victory with Sam Lingard making 41 and Chris Storey 51no but their effort fell marginally short at 184-6. Nevertheless the 19 points gained by a draw was sufficient to ensure survival. Bottom placed Pocklington had a close fought home draw with Londesborough Park which lifted them up one place but could not prevent them dropping into Division 3. Decent scores by Neil Jackson 39, Ed Gallagher 40 and Greg Nesbitt 33 enabled Pocklington to reach 174 all out with Darren Moody claiming 5-89 and Mark Tissiman 3-52. Mick Drewery then lead Park’s reply with 53 with Ian Hodson adding 27. However Jamie Kember 3-59 and Joss Room 5-57 were able to peg Park to 160-9. Tenth placed Ripon entertained 11th placed Osbaldwick in a critical relegation encounter which turned out to be a one sided affair in favour of the visitors whose 9 wicket win plunged Ripon down to bottom place and saw them hit the relegation spot for the first time at the most inappropriate stage of the season. Ripon made 151-8 which was easily surpassed by Osbaldwick who, after losing Andy Hall for 29 went on to win without any further setback as Matt Dunne made 66no and skipper Rob Bispham 48no. Osbaldwick’s win lifted them from 11th to a safe ninth place. Runs flowed at Tadcaster Magnet where the home total of 211-8 was overturned by Malton who edged to a one wicket triumph to clinch a divisional third place. Ed Day with 63, top scored for Magnet who also had Ben Preston 31 and Phil Smith 34 making good runs. Stu Whatmore took 3-75 for Malton. In his side’s reply, Danny Foxton hit 62, Jim Dawson 47, Wayne Dawson 39 and Josh Greenlay 26. Paul Clark bowled his heart out to take 6-88 whilst Ben Preston took 3-37 but they were unable to stave off defeat. Batting first when entertaining Beverley Town, Whitkirk enjoyed an opening stand of 141 between Mark Murphy 93 and Mike O’Brien 53. More runs were provided by Dave Tubby with 47 no as Whitkirk moved to 232-7 despite a 4-46 return from Peter Parnaby. Beverley were also given a sound start by Tim Smith 40 and Ben Fish 48. Their partnership was built on by Ian Gilyon 34 and Matt Smith 25 but Ben Danby’s 4-43 kept the hosts ahead as Beverley closed on 217-9. DIVISION 3 Thorp Arch & Boston Spa sealed the Division 3 title when they had an easy away win over a Duncombe Park whose seemingly certain promotion at the half way stage has withered away to leave them some way off the pace in fourth place. Chris Magee hit 70 in Arch’s 173-9 with Jonathon Leckenby taking 3-45. Will Bartlett 5-41 then blasted away the early Park batsmen to leave the home side floundering at 44-6. Fifteen years old Connor Campbell, batting at number 7, then made an accomplished 40 that augers well for the future as he and Barry Weldon 21 added 50 for the ninth wicket. The stand was ended when the latter was run out off a no ball and Park’s innings ended on 138. Ironically, within three minutes heavy rain enveloped the ground and would have prevented any further play. With struggling Drax to play on the final day of the season, Goole Town were hopeful of climbing away from 11th place when the sides clashed in the final fixture. However, Drax with just one win in 21 games had clearly not read the script and as they inflicted a 7 run defeat on the hosts who thus find themselves accompanying their conquerors into Division 4. Drax’s S Smith hit 85 whilst Andrew Shelton 45 and Sam Jackson 28 helped post a useful 208-9. Steve Hicks took 3-52 for Goole and followed with 37 runs. Colleagues Neil Webster 26 and Lee Haywood 63 also batted soundly but Rich Ounsley’s 4-38 sealed Goole’s fate as they were bowled out for 201 to leave them just 8 runs short of a victory that would have prevented the drop. Hovingham fended off a their threat of relegation by gaining much the better of a draw at Malton. Within Hovingham’s score of 207 there were good innings by James Forwood 33, George Mosey 44 and Steve Mosey 26. Veteran Tony Linsley bowled well to take 5-59. Forwood then claimed 3-19 as Malton struggled to 119-8 with only Des Wyrill 58 making any impression. It was just as well that Hull had already clinched promotion a week earlier as an amazing collapse saw them lose by 3 runs at New Earswick. The home side were able to post a total of 207 thanks to Mark Benson with 42 and, more specifically, Craig Stimpson who hit 93. Lewis Andrew had 4-54 for Hull who then moved serenely to 174 without loss as BenWatkin made 77 and Martin Watkin exactly 100. However once their partnership was broken, Hull collapsed dramatically as they lost all ten wickets for a mere thirty runs as Stimpson claimed 4-18 to leave them all out for 204. First Class umpire Jeff Evans was a spectator when Scarborough entertained Sheriff Hutton at North Marine Road and, following an injury to one of the umpires, donned the white coat to officiate for the remainder of the match. He thus had a close quarters view of arguably Scarborough’s best performance of the season as they hit 246-6 on the way to beating third placed Sheriff Hutton by 69 runs. The home side’s anchor man was Sam Hills who made 77 not out. He was backed up by Mike Hurst with 30 and Tom Bruce who made 47 but it was Darren Mills who made the game’s most telling contribution as he hit an unbeaten 64 off only 29 deliveries. When Sheriff replied Geoff Schofield made 63 and Chrlie Foster 35 but a combination of Charlie Gibson 3-24, Nick Sumpton 3-40 and Ashish Kundi 4-36 had the Castlemen all out for 177. Mark Graves made 45 and M Smith 38 when Carlton Towers were dismissed for 150 at Welton & Brough who ran out 3 wicket winners with Greg Fewster hitting 70. DIVISION 4 Runaway divisional champions Woodhouse Grange maintained their unbeaten record when they had a whacking 153 run win at Pickering to win the division by 124 points. Run machines Jonathon Bean 96 and Matt Hattee 61 were again on the ball with the bat as was Matt Shepherd 36 and Jamie Hopwood who made 25 in Grange’s 258-4. Pickering then made arguably the worst start of the season in the League as they lost their first three wickets before a run was scored. Ryan Boyes 58 and Tom Sigsworth 25 added a smidgeon of respectability but Paul Grewer’s 3-20 helped to close the response on 105. Bubwith lost for the 13th time when they had an unsuccessful trip to Driffield where they were dismissed for 133 as Jamie Greavson took 6-59 and Mark Addinall 3-10. Neil Readman held his head high with 67. Neil Pratt then hit back with 3-36 but John Addy made 39 in advance of an unbeaten 46 by Dave Woodcock that sealed a five wicket home win. Huby went in to their final game at Fenner requiring a mere one point in order to avoid relegation. This is precisely what they achieved as they were well beaten by the home side who ran out nine wicket victors. The all important point came by way of a batting bonus due to Huby making 134, thanks in the main, to Chris Cundall’s 52. Fenner knocked off the runs in 28 overs with Monu Mono Singh making 41 and Ben Hatfield 55 not out. Heworth are agonisingly one point behind Huby and are thus relegated despite winning comfortably at home to Stillington. There were handy innings by Joel Johnson 33, Paul Neal 38 and Gary Hall 31 as Heworth made 184-9 with Karl Simpson taking 3-47. Stillington were then whipped out for just 105 with Nad Sadiq claiming 3 for 8. These figures were bettered by veteran Trevor Walton who, in what he states is his final appearance after a lengthy career at Elm Park Way, took three wickets for just one run. All who have played against him over many years will wish him a long and happy retirement from the game. Hull Zingari slipped from 3rd to 4th place when they lost at home to Easingwold after Jason Sargent’s haul of 5 for 9 in 10 overs had seen them all out for 100. Only Martin Russell with 27 offered any resistance. Matt Scarr then hit back with 3-23 but Tom Langstaff 49 and Shiraz Kazi 31 took Easingwold to a five wicket win. Sessay must have viewed the second half of the game with some trepidation after being dismissed for only 149 by Acomb whose C Foster took 4-35. Sessay owed a good deal to Giles Cressey 40no and Karl Carver 36. Carver then continued his good work in taking 4-24. Andy Ingle 32 and Matt Williams 25 kept Acomb in the frame but Dan Easton claimed 3-29 to bowl out Acomb for 117 and gain Sessay a 32 run win that sealed their promotion into Division 3. DIVISION 5 Divisional champions Castleford took first innings when they entertained West Riding rivals Whitkirk at Savile Park. Josh Kelly 3-56 helped reduce them to 80-4 but then Simon Parker hit an unbeaten 111 and Glen Shelley made 79no as the pair added 163 in an unbroken 5th wicket stand to hoist Castleford’s score to 243-4. When Whitkirk replied the bulk of their 118 all out was provided by two batsmen with Ashley Ogden making 44 and Josh Watson 52. Simon Tucker took 3-26 for the winners. After something of a disappointing season, Sheriff Hutton Bridge went out in fine style when they had a 118 run win at Civil Service. Danny Kiernan hit 55, Chris Todd 31 and Jack Hugill an unbeaten 44 in Bridge’s 230-7. Service were then swept away by Bridge’s experienced bowling pairing of Eddie Hull with 4-19 and Mike Smith who took 3-45 in a home total of 112 all out. Rowntrees second teamer John Down responded to a late call to assist his club’s first team in fine style by making a composed 51. Paul Horner added 37 but Selby’s 14 years old Alex Bowden proved to be a tricky purveyor of spin as he claimed 7 for 43 to bowl the hosts out for 129. Selby’s successful 130-5 was hinged on a patient 45 from Neil Wilson. Ed Townend made 28 whilst the youthful Bowden was on hand with an unbeaten 18 when a 5 wicket win materialized. Rowntree’s youngster 13 years old Phil Mitchell, on loan from Londesborough Park came out with much credit in taking 3-42 in 7.4 overs. Relegated Thirsk suffered a 4 wicket defeat at Yapham in a low scoring game after being dismissed for 87. Their two elder statesmen Neil Collinson 26 and Barry Petty 29 were the only two batsmen to make any mark as Martin Pearson 3-20 and Dan Edwards 4-10 took control. Petty then also posed problems by capturing 4-22 but Barry Pearson produced the game's best batting and his 36 enabled Yapham to take the match honours at 88-6. Tom Shaw hit an unbeaten 107 for promoted Huntington but found himself on the losing side when a fine team effort earned York IV a 2 wicket win in a high scoring encounter. Shaw was well supported by Ralph Bradley who made 57 as Huntington were dismissed for 228 in the 44th over. For York, Kallum Ahmed took 4-44 and Neil Reader 3-18. No fewer than five York batsmen then combined to produce a fine, and successful, run chase. The nap-handers were Nick Elliott 39, Mark Thomas 47, Ryan Waite 46, Matt Boyle 30 and Kallum Ahmed who was unbeaten with 33 in a score of 232-8. For the losers, Noel Collins took 3-47 and Dan Hosford 3-66. LEAGUE TABLES
